Don’t Overdo the Dimensioning and Tolerancing
(In accordance with the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard)

PDF of this Tip

Some folks think they have to add a lot of notes and extra dimensions and tolerances for the folks who don’t know the Standard very well if at all. If you start doing this, where does it stop? Here is a complete drawing in accordance with the Y14.5 standard. The second drawing has a lot of unnecessary (redundant) information added, but the drawing has the same meaning as the first one. Don’t try to explain everything on the drawing. Just follow the Standard and The GD&T Hierarchy and state the functional requirements as simply and completely as possible. This means taking advantage of the default conditions stated in the ASME Y14.5 standard. It also means that the folks using the drawing should know how to read it!
