Consider a Corporate Addendum
(In accordance with Y14.5M-1994 standard)

PDF of this Tip

Many companies have developed an addendum to the Y14.5 standard. This addendum can be used to:

  • Select an option from within Y14.5M.
Example: The Standard offers 5 ways to control coaxiality. Some are more economical and functional than others.
  • Clarify a concept from Y14.5M.
Example: Applying MMC is not well explained in the Standard.
Include a concept not covered in Y14.5M.
Example: Terms such as wall thickness or corner break are not defined in the Standard.
  • Discourage the use of a concept from Y14.5M that does not fit your business.
Example: Symmetry is difficult to measure and is rarely, if ever, functional.
  • Benchmark other successful corporations.
Example: Several automotive, aerospace and machine tool companies have developed corporate addendums.

When developing your corporate addendum, be careful not to reinvent the wheel. Some companies have gone overboard with an addendum that causes more confusion than clarity. A 10- to 20-page document is usually sufficient.
