Keeping Features In-Line Requires a Geometric Tolerance

Showing features “in-line” isn’t enough to make sure they are made that way. On this drawing three flat surfaces are shown in the same plane. This shows what the goal is but without the profile of a surface tolerance there would not be a requirement to keep the features coplanar.

Please note that usually a position tolerance will have a datum reference. This is not possible where a pattern of features is used as the primary datum feature. Here the position tolerance is a feature relating tolerance zone framework which assures that the three features act as one straight feature. The drawings are intentionally incomplete.
