The cylindricity tolerance can be used with cylindrical features only.
The tolerance will be on a leader line which points to the cylindrical feature.
Prior to 2018, a cylindricity feature control frame could be associated with a size tolerance. This is not allowed in the 2018 Standard. The circularity callout must be separate from the size dimension.
Cylindricity is also very difficult to measure without the aid of a computer. Both circularity and cylindricity require sweeping the surface to get many points which are usually evaluated by a computer program.
Cylindricity controls a cylindrical feature better than the control provided by:
- a size tolerance
- total runout
- profile of a surface
